About Screening, Diagnosis and Non-Surgical Treatment of Headaches, Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ/TMD), Snoring, Sleep Apnea and CPAP Intolerance
at OU Health & Wellness Fair
April 26, 2005 – Norman, OK – Craniofacial Pain Associates staff members, Michele Loman and Elizabeth Bennie, will share free information and answer questions about diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of head, neck and facial pain; temporomandibular disorders (TMJ/TMD); and sleep disorders at Booth #33 during The Health & Wellness Fair on Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at the Molly Shi Boren Ballroom in the Oklahoma Memorial Union.
More than 10.8 million people in the U.S. are affected by TMD. Signs and symptoms may include: headaches, earaches, neck pain or stiffness, dizziness and jaw joint clicking or popping. “It’s important for the public to know that more than 95% of all patients who suffer from jaw-joint related pain and dysfunction can be treated successfully by a qualified dentist, without prolonged drug use or surgery,” said Ms. Loman. “Since TMD is a medical condition that is treated by dentists yet often goes undiagnosed in the medical community, we’ve also developed a ‘One-Minute Screening Exam’ for patients to take to their physicians’ or general dentists’ offices. Seeing a ‘regular dentist’ may not be adequate, since all dentists do not possess the necessary advanced training and expertise,” added Ms. Bennie.
The OU Health & Wellness Fair also provides a much-needed opportunity to heighten awareness of the importance of recuperative sleep to good health. The fact is that patients who suffer from mild to moderate sleep apnea patients are among the largest number of patients not screened today. That’s why a self-scoring sleep questionnaire will be available at the Craniofacial Pain Associates booth. Ms. Loman and Ms. Bennie will also answer questions about how to choose the “right” sleep medicine dentist, what happens during a dental sleep examination, use of oral sleep appliances as adjuncts or alternatives to standard therapies (e.g., CPAP), dental and medical co-treatment, insurance benefits and more. “It’s great to be able to let people who suffer from morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness know that quality care is available – right here in our own community – from Dr. Robert Talley, the only dentist in Oklahoma who is certified by the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine,” said Ms. Loman.
For those unable to attend the OU Health and Wellness Fair, answers to frequently asked questions are available on the Craniofacial Pain Associates’ Web site at www.tmj-pain.com/faq.htm. New patients are welcome, and appointments for TMD and/or dental sleep exams may be requested online or by calling Craniofacial Pain Associates’ office at 405/321-8030.
