Robert L. Talley, DDS, Earns“Diplomate” Credential From American Board Of Dental Sleep Medicine

June 16, 2005 – Norman, OK – Local dentist, Robert L. Talley, DDS, was recently named as a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM). He is one of only 110 dentists across the country – and the only dentist in the state of Oklahoma – to achieve this certification.

Affecting one-third of the United States’ adult population, sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) encompasses a range of nighttime respiratory problems, all with negative health implications and some of which are fatal. The good news is that qualified dentists can treat SDB problems – such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea – quickly and effectively. Advancements in dental sleep medicine are also enabling dentists to provide sleep patients that have been unable to obtain relief of their symptoms from standard therapies, such as CPAP ( continuous positive airway pressure), with non-surgical options that can improve quality of life and increase life expectancy.

Today, sleep-related problems are the third most common complaint heard in the physician’s office (behind colds and headaches). People who have sleep disorders may experience fatigue, irritability, depression, reduced concentration and memory, more frequent illnesses, plus workplace and/or auto accidents resulting from falling asleep on the job or at the wheel. Untreated can also put individuals at significantly greater risk of developing diabetes and high blood pressure or suffering a stroke.

According to the ABDSM, “ the certification process that Dr. Talley has undergone identifies him as being knowledgeable in the field of dental sleep medicine, which includes basic sleep medicine, oral appliance therapy and upper airway surgery. ABDSM certification also indicates to patients, professional colleagues and organizations in both medicine and dentistry that Dr. Talley has met nationally established qualifications in these areas.”

Dr. Talley has been successfully treating sleep -disordered breathing in his Norman-based practice since 1982. He continues to welcome new patients. He has also gained national prominence as a dental sleep medicine expert and will be present a lecture titled, “Craniofacial Pain, TMD & Sleep Disorders: What Every Dentist Should Know” at the 20 th Anniversary Symposium of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain (www.aacfp.org) in Oklahoma City on August 5-6, 2005.
